Hello,The ends that you slide the plates on are roughly about 6 1/2".The number of plates that will fit depends on the weight increments you are planning on using.For example, this bar can hold two 45lbs plates and a collar per side or four 5lbs plates and a collar per side.It all depends on the size of the plates and the weight increments you will be using.
