As we prepare for SNOWMAGEDDON, here are 5 things to help get you ready for that shovelling workout.
First – add some core rotation and balance work into your training program. How our bodies brace in order to scoop the snow and fling it, all comes from our core being able to support the external load of the snow pile, and create rotation and power to satisfyingly launch it off the driveway!
Second – be sure you warm up and stretch! No, we do not (only) mean donning Snow Suits. To prevent strain and injury, you should aim to get your torso, legs and shoulders ready for the work load.
Third – know your limits – if your cardio isn’t what it used to be, take your time and pace yourself. The colder air, and increased efforts to move the snow and maintain balance, is often more challenging than we anticipate.
Fourth – make sure you take a few minutes to stretch after, to prevent muscle soreness.
And Fifth, last but not least - ensure you HYDRATE! Even though it may not have felt like much, if you’re sweating when it is cold out, you’re losing more water than you think, and dehydration slows recovery and increases the likelihood of soreness and the potential for injury.
We have tools for all your shovel prep needs, whether for strengthening, cardio, or recovery. You can head to the main page or come into any of our locations and check em out!
