The rubber plates don't bang around in your gymbag. When you need to increase the weight by 2.5lbs it too much, these allow you to do that.

Being so small, some of the other kinds actually break or chip when you load them too fast because the materials are brittle. These are rubber. Simple rubber plates are also good because they don't pinch your fingers when you're loading them on the bar.
